William A. Hazel, Jr., MD serves as Chief Executive Officer of Claude Moore Opportunities, where he leads initiatives that strengthen Virginia's healthcare workforce through education, innovation, and strategic partnerships.

A board-certified orthopedic surgeon, Dr. Hazel previously served two terms as Virginia's Secretary of Health and Human Resources, overseeing the Commonwealth's health and human services agencies and advancing policies to improve health outcomes. Throughout his career, he has championed collaborative, evidence-informed solutions to expand access to care, address workforce shortages, and promote prevention-focused initiatives.

Dr. Hazel earned a degree in Civil Engineering from Princeton University, received his medical degree from Duke University School of Medicine, and completed his orthopedic surgery residency at the Mayo Clinic. Prior to his public service, he practiced orthopedic surgery in Northern Virginia and served as Assistant Surgeon for the Washington Redskins and Team Physician for D.C. United.
