Dr. Richard Obermann currently is an independent consultant and president of Obermann SciTech LLC. He is also Senior Advisor at the Colorado Space Policy Center, Chair of the Space Telescope Science Institute’s Visiting Committee, and member of the Space Studies Board. Prior to his retirement from the U.S. House of Representatives in 2023, he served as Chief of Staff for the House Committee on Science, Space, and Technology.

Before coming to Congress, he was Senior Professional Staff on the National Academies Aeronautics and Space Engineering Board. After receiving his PhD in aerospace engineering from Princeton University, he worked for over a decade as a Member of the Technical Staff at the MITRE Corporation. He is a member of the NAE and an elected member of the International Academy of Astronautics, a Fellow of the AIAA, the American Astronautical Society, and the British Interplanetary Society.
