R. Matthew Gardner is the vice president of transmission planning and operations at Dominion Energy Virginia. Since joining the company in 2008, he has held roles in planning, operations, maintenance, and engineering. Previously, he worked with the Tennessee Valley Authority, ABB Corporate Research Switzerland, and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory. Gardner serves on several boards and advisory councils, including the North American Transmission Forum and the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers Power and Energy Society, and is president-elect of the Cigré U.S. National Committee.
He is an executive engineer in residence at Virginia Commonwealth University and serves on the Industry Advisory Board for George Mason University’s College of Engineering. Gardner holds several patents on power grid analysis and has published widely on power grid operations, planning, and analysis.
