Dr. Amarda Shehu is George Mason University’s 2024 Inaugural VP and Chief AI Officer. She is a Professor of Computer Science and Associate Dean for AI Innovation in the College of Engineering and Computing. Amarda directs and co-directs several university centers on AI, human-machine teaming, cybersecurity, and innovation for business enterprises and served as 2019-2022 Program Director at the National Science Foundation (NSF). She led the Institute for Digital InnovAtion as Associate Vice President for Research during 2022 and 2024. Amarda has published over 180 research articles and leads an active laboratory on both foundational AI and AI-enabled research on problems with societal resonance. She is a 2022 Fellow of the American Institute for Medical and Biological Engineering and has received many awards on her research, teaching, and mentorship, including the NSF CAREER Award and the Outstanding Faculty Award from Virginia. Amarda obtained her PhD from Rice University in 2008.
